Rising Author Vlog-Tag!

by | 9 October 2017 | Life | 24 comments

I have a list of tags that I’ve been given. A list about 7-tags long. I don’t want to bore you all with ‘oh, and yet another tag post’ so I decided to find a new and different way to answer these questions.

Today, I’m eliminating one of the seven tags and am going to do the Rising Author’s tag (courtesy of Jess) in vlog form.

Since this was the first vlog I’ve done since launching my website, I considered trying to be slightly more professional. Because I felt a little like it would be awkward or weird to have my normal sort of vlog on a professional website. And then it hit me.

No. I can’t let professionalism get in the way of being me.

This is me. I laugh a lot. I stumble over my words and say ‘um’ way too much. I forget what I was saying in the middle of sentences. I don’t want to show you all a ‘Jane Maree’ that isn’t real. I want to be a friend to you, and to do that, I can’t put on a face just for the look of it.

So here you go. This vlog is absolutely 100% me (including the fact that I accidentally slipped into an accent once or twice). I even sang at one point (although normally I sing…slightly better than that. xP)

Also it’s the first vlog where I set up the camera and edited the entire thing myself (I was trying to give my wonderful sisters a break 😛 ) so if there’s anything odd about it–it’s all my fault. xD

There you have it. I hope you enjoyed watching it as much as I enjoyed doing it. (And Jess enjoyed herself too, even though she might try deny it.)

I’m not going to tag anyone, but these questions were quite fun to answer so I’ll put them here, and you can feel free to snag them and do a post yourself! Just drop me a link in the comments and I’d love to read it. 😀

What do you struggle most in your writing with?
What inspired you to write your WIP?
What is the theme of your WIP?
Which do you enjoy more; planning out your character development or your world?
Do you have a set genre that you write to?
What would be your most dreaded genre to have to write?
Do you have a favorite character?
If so, why are they your favourite? (If not, why don’t you have a favourite?)
Are you a nice writer or an evil one?
If you could insert yourself into any part of your WIP in the place of your MC, what would it be and why?

I hope that was more interesting than just another boring old tag post. 😛

Your turn! What inspired you to write your WIP? Can you pick one of your precious characters as a favourite or do you love them all the same?

Jane Maree

Jane Maree

Jane Maree is an Australian writer, adventurer at heart, beloved daughter of the King of Kings, and believer in at least six impossible things before breakfast. Raised on fairy tales, scraped knees, and makeshift swords, she has yet to outgrow any of them. In her day job, Jane teaches music and freelances as an editor, but by night she crafts daring stories of broken heroes overcoming extraordinary odds.

arg! my laptop won’t let me watch the video!! well, i know it was great, and so glad u decided to be you! 🙂
my favorite character in my WIP is Danni Kay (Danni is short for Daniele) because she’s funny and unique.

    • Jane Maree

Aw no! That’s no good–maybe it’ll work later. Thank you so much though! <3 ^.^
Danni Kay is such a cool, unique name. I love it!

  2. Jake T.

EEEP a vlog!!! Your accent is so cool 🙂 Nice job!

    • Jane Maree

Hehe thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it. (Both the vlog and my accent. XD)

  3. Krystal

YES EVIL WRITER *steals all the charries and hugs them* XD

What inspired me, hmm… probably the books I’ve been reading lately, the mildly scifi/dystopian/idk what to call ’em. But yeah, those definitely helped with the whole switching from hisfic to scifi thing I did a while back. As for the rest of it, idk, I kinda just sorta came up with it, I guess. XD Also, theme is sorta coming from what I’ve been learning lately, through Bible reading and preaching and things like that. So yeah. : )

Um. I can’t pick a favorite, I don’t think…although maaaaaybe my first character ever, b/c he was my first? But then there’s the smols that I love very much, and my MC and Ally that I love too, and Villain that’s basically a sunshine child who’s also somehow the villain(ahem yes don’t ask how, I’m not sure how yet *squints at him*), and….yeah, I can’t pick a favorite. XP

    • Jane Maree

Books are the best for inspiration, honestly. That’s super cool that your theme is coming from your recent, personal learning! 🙂

Smols are all so lovable. But whoooo a sunshine child villain? YES PLEASE. That sounds EPIC, Krystal. *squeaks*

  4. Jem Jones

That was fun to watch! (Your little sister is SO CUTE. She should be a regular feature xD) And it’s my belief that ALL videos should have a blooper reel at the end xD

Agreed on the ‘favourite character’ thing – how can I pick one over the others?? They’re all favourites in different ways!

    • Jane Maree

Yay thank you! She is so cuute. Those videos were just me testing to check that I knew how to work the camera, and then I just had to keep them in somewhere. *nods* Maybe I can have her interviewing me next time. XD
Blooper reels at the end are the funniest part. xP I cracked up every single time I watched through them when I was editing it.

Exactly my thoughts! If someone asks me, I usually start to say one and then say “No but she’s precious and adorable and–SO’S HE. And that one and that one and I love them allll.” 😛

  5. J.A.Penrose

*cracks up* Wow! An awesome post Jane, and some pretty cool assistants too.

Anyways. *clears throat* You had awesome answers and it was cool to know that you clearly love Tolkien, but could never write like him.

    Aaaaaand… I guess it wasn’t toooooooo bad….

    • Jane Maree

Hehe thank you, thank you. xD

Yes! Tolkien’s pretty good, but I personally don’t like that style at all. Odd. 😛

See?? I told you it wouldn’t be horrible.

  6. Brie Donning

I just realized why I felt like I had already met you. I’d watched one of your vlogs before.
I know exactly where the inspiration for that scene came from. Labelled buckets for cutlery seem very familiar.

I’m a nice author because I find it very hard to be cruel to my characters. Well apart from letting them love people who die and make generally horrible decisions that result in terrible guilt.

One of my favourite characters is inspired by my younger brothers, Gideon especially. He’s a inventor and explorer and so sweet and heroic. (And tough and ridiculous because he’s 15 and would hate to be called sweet.)

I found Tolkien a bit hard to read. Just a bit dense. I’d already broken my concentration and patience by skimming to many books, so I had to turn to audio to get through LoTR.

    • Jane Maree

Oh haha yes! That would explain it. 😛
YES. XD That’s exactly where that scene came from—last year. xP

Yay for nice authors. 🙂 I’m sure your characters are very grateful…except for when you kill off the people they love…and make them terribly guilty… xD

Aw yes, that sounds like a great character.

Same, same. There’s a lot of description and travelling and I do skim over those details. 😛

  7. Gray Marie

I am so jealous of y’all’s accents! XD

This tag is so much fun!! 🙂

    • Jane Maree

Haha thanks. XD I think American accents are humourous myself, so there you go. 😛

      • Gray Marie

Ugh, I feel like our accents are so rough, but I do like the southern accents a lot. We have a bunch of passive aggressive middle age women that we know, but their southern accents are so sweet no one realizes that they’re being insulted! Except if you’re southern and know that “aw, bless your little heart” basically means they think you’re dumb. XD

But don’t get me started on the accents from up north, when people come down to Texas I have to strain to understand them, and I think they need a translator for our slang!

        • Jane Maree

Oh my word, that’s hilarious. XD
Accents are just so fun honestly, and it’s really intriguing to listen to the different ways and tones people say the same word in. 😛

Australian slang words keep catching me off guard. I’ll be talking online with an American and then say something that seems perfectly normal for me, but they have no clue what I even mean. xP

  8. Ivie Brooks

Wow, your blog is amazing! Your accents are cool, too! Which American accents are most humorous to you, because there’s many different American accents. XD

    • Jane Maree

      Awk thank you, Ivie!
There are so many different sorts of accents, but I’m prone to starting to giggle when I hear some certain words pronounced in any American accent. Particularly just because here, we don’t pronounce our ‘r’s but over there it’s very obviously pronounced. 😛 I find the differences funny. xD

  9. Quinley

You did a awesome job on the tag (Vlog)!:) It was so awesome and funny…I was actually cracking up while watching it.

    • Jane Maree

Thanks!! Hehe I’m glad you enjoyed it! That makes me really happy to hear. 😀

  10. TeenWriter

    Love your blog! Just subscribed!

    • Jane Maree

Aw thank you! Welcome and thanks so much for dropping by. 🙂

  11. MiddleEarthMusician

I finally watched this vlog!!! I LOVE your accent! (Sometimes I forget you have it, and then I watch a vlog of yours and it hits me again. It’s so cool! XD) Loved the tag answers; Agent Kit is sounding super cool. 😀 I DIED when you started singing “You’re Welcome”; my siblings and mom do that all the time! Your sister is adorable. X-) Thanks for doing vlogs!!! Love them! XD

    • Jane Maree

Haha I’m glad you enjoyed it!! XD
YES. XP That was one of the parts where I was thinking of cutting out but then I was just ‘nooo, I’ll keep it in’ because obviously you need to hear me singing that. 😛
You’re welcome! I love doing them.
