Am Currently – Updates on All the Things

by | 19 October 2018 | Books, Life, Writing | 33 comments

I haven’t done a life update post for AGES. I think it was about April when I did my last one and somehow the year has just continued doing its thing, and we’re actually already closer to the end of October than the beginning. So it’s high time for me to do a little bit of rambling about all things writing and bookish and adventures.

The writing things!

Guess what…

I’m still editing.

At the beginning of this year, I had it all planned out for when I was going to do editing and what months and how much and blah blah and it’s all been working (mostly) according to schedule.

Except Beginning-Of-The-Year-Me didn’t really grasp how long this whole process takes. I knew I’d be editing for two months here, one month there, and another two months again. But right now I feel like I’ve been editing FOR-EVAH.

A Sprig of Green has come a long way over the past few months and right now I’m rewriting the second half of the book. It’s been fun but very hard at the same time. But I’m getting through it! Slowly! No. Giving. Up. 😅

I’m aiming to have these final major edits finished up by the end of the month, then be able to move on to the good old NaNoWriMo! I haven’t shared anything much about this novel yet, but here’s a little aesthetic glimpse into my story board…

Broken glass, a piano player, and…maybe one or two shootouts thrown into the bargain. 😏

I started out on Instagram

Most of you have probably heard the story about how I accidentally joined instagram, so I won’t tell it again. (If you don’t know, ask me in the comments. 😂) But since I was there, I decided to be officially and fully there and active.

I’ve been posting twice a week and having so much fun with all the bookish photos (you can stalk my account here). I’ve got a long way to go before I’ll have the whole taking-photos thing mastered (I think a couple of these aren’t even properly in focus, whoops, and the colour/lighting isn’t the greatest), but it’s been another really exciting step. Yay for book photos and building platforms! But mostly books! 😛

Conquering the TBR

I’ve read twenty books since March…and what a gorgeous bunch of books! Only two of these books were not five-star ratings and I’m both amazed and delighted that I’ve managed to keep up such a perfect run of wonderful books.

I was going to add a special mention to two favourite books from that list, but then that list of two books turned into a lot more as I remembered how much I loved each of these stories, so let it just suffice to say that I LOVED THEM SO MUCH.

I’ve just started on Unblemished (by the lovely Sara Ella) and the first few chapters have been so unique and crazy and I’m looking forward to seeing where this book goes!

Life Adventures

There’s no way I could cover all the life things that have happened in the last few months, because this isn’t a biography, so here’s just a few recent things that have been going on in the life of Jane.

I drove a three hour trip to my cousin’s house last week! It was my longest solo drive yet, but everything went smoothly. My cousin and I hung out and talked books and characters and a lot of different things, and it was a really great time. On the way home I stopped and bought myself a coffee and it made me feel so old and adult-y.

I watched the first Mission Impossible movie for the first time and I really really loved it. I quite enjoy agent/spy stories, and this one is already up pretty high on my list. I feel like I should rewatch it just so I can get my head around the great twists in the plot.

And there’s been a lot of music, editing, and all the small, ordinary things of life. My brain has also temporarily melted so I can’t think of anything else important to note here. 😬

Things to Come

I posted a piece of flash fiction here back in July, and it was a lot of fun, so you can be expecting more of that at some point in the future.

Closer to NaNo I’ll be talking about my next project! At this point, it’s just a mostly plotless concept, so I’ll wait until I actually know what it’s about before I spill the beans. 😛

And…I honestly don’t know what else? One day I will learn to plan in advance, but for now it’s all a guessing game. We’ll all have to wait and see what the last few months of the year bring. But enough about me now, I want to hear all about your adventures!

How is your writing/reading/lifing going? Tell me all the things!

Jane Maree

Jane Maree

Jane Maree is an Australian writer, adventurer at heart, beloved daughter of the King of Kings, and believer in at least six impossible things before breakfast. Raised on fairy tales, scraped knees, and makeshift swords, she has yet to outgrow any of them. In her day job, Jane teaches music and freelances as an editor, but by night she crafts daring stories of broken heroes overcoming extraordinary odds.

  1. J.A.Penrose

Ahhh, yes. The joys of the ASoG edits.

    And I love this,
“Closer to NaNo I’ll be talking about my next project!”
Jane. Hate to break it to you, but next week is the end of October. 😛

Eeeek! All of the book there that I’ve read have been really good!

    • Jane Maree

      *waves a tiny, exhausted flag*

Hush, don’t tell me that. Actually it’s the week after next that is the end of October, but yes it is still pretty close. 🙈

      Yes, they’re all so amazing!

  2. Hannah Gaudette

Oh, dear, I am still editing also. 😉 But it’s coming. I just rewrote my climax and I LOVE it. Finally! I wrote something I like! 😉

Anyway, my TBR list doesn’t look quite that good, especially since I just read a book that was so good it has kept me from reading almost anything else. Usually I can get over a good book in a couple days, but . . .

Alas, back to the editing! Let’s see if I can finish in time for NaNo.

    • Jane Maree

Woohoo, editing buddies! That’s so cool! Having a satisfying climax is the greatest feeling ever (and my climaxes are normally pitiful flops in the first draft). 😍

      Ooh, what was the book?

      We can do this, girl!

      • Hannah Gaudette

What was the book? Glad you asked! 😉

Unbroken (young adult version) by Laura Hillenbrand, a historical non-fiction. Just, WOW. I had better not say any more than that or my reply to your question will be about a hundred and fifty words too long. It was that good. I just finished reading the book a second time. 🙂

        • Jane Maree

I’m definitely going to check that one out! It sounds like it could be super good.

  3. Nicole Dust

I keep hearing such good things about In 27 Days! But I don’t know if I’ll read it yet . . .

Haha, yes, plotless concepts of NaNo novels are the best! Can’t wait to hear about it (once it’s a little less plotless, of course! XD).

    • Jane Maree

Personally, I really really enjoyed it, but it definitely depends on whether you like those sorts of books. I love a bit of romance, and the theme was really beautiful, so I was totally sold.

Hopefully I can get my rear into gear and finish these edits so I can actually get to plotting before November is upon us!

  4. Evelyn

How do you accidently join Instagram?

Maybe something like how I accidently created a website once…. xD

    • Jane Maree

A friend came and asked me how easy it was to sign up, so I went to check it out. I put in all my details, clicked ‘sign up’ and informed her that it was actually extremely easy to make an account. 🤣

Ahh we can be the ‘accidentally doing very complicated/obvious things’ team. 😂

      • Evelyn

        That’s hilarious. XD

        • Jane Maree

I’m not sure I’ll be able to live this story down. 😛

Though, to be honest, it’ll be me who goes around telling it because I think it’s great. 😂

  5. Janice

    This year has been insane.
I’ve read nearly 80 books, joined Advanced Orchestra (which means I play more craziness), crocheted a lot…

    • Jane Maree

WOW! That sounds crazy. I’m in awe, girl! 😱

  6. Lilian

I loved this update, Jane! Your Instagram is aesthetic goals. 😛 (And so is your blog!)

Also, congratulations on solo driving those three hours! It was probably scary at first but YOU DID IT YAY.

(and how did you join IG accidentally pray tell me)

    • Jane Maree

Aw, thank you! I’ve been having so much fun with my Instagram shots. They look so fancy and aesthetic in the photo, but that’s because you can’t see my messy room of papers and clothes and everything else lying around all over the floor. 😏

I was a little nervous, but everything went super smoothly, and it was actually quite fun. I exhausted my repertoire of disney songs to sing on the way there. 😛

Pretty much: a friend was having trouble making an account, and they asked me how to do it. I had no idea, but I went to find out. I signed up, told them it was super easy, then realised I had just made myself an account. 😂

  7. Jenna

Love this post! 😀 I can’t wait to hear more about your nano novel 😉👍

    • Jane Maree

Thanks! Me too, to be honest. 😂

  8. Kendra Lynne @ The Wanderling

Its so good to hear about what’s going on in your life! Sounds like its an adventure, as always. 😉 I’ve heard of the Mission Impossible movies and they seem like they’d be right up my alley. I love action movies. 😛 It looks like you are completely rocking your Instagram! I hope to have an Instagram account someday. 🙂

    -Kendra @

    • Jane Maree

Anything can be an adventure if you look at it right. 😛

I was recommended them by a friend, and I really liked them. They’re not super clean, but they’re pretty good for action/spy movies.

You definitely should! It’s a lot of fun. 😀

      • Kendra Lynne @ The Wanderling

That is very true! I try to look at everything in life as an adventure. 🙂

There are so many movies I’d like to see that aren’t very clean, such as the Back to the Future movies. Hopefully we’ll get VidAngel so that I can see them. 🙂

        • Jane Maree

That’s the best way to do it. 😊

Ooh yes, those are great ones!

  9. MiddleEarthMusician

AH YOUR NANO PROJECT IS LOOKING SO COOL!!! AND CONGRATS ON YOUR READING LIST. AND ALL THE BEAUTIFUL BOOK PICTURES. <333 (I just feel like yelling so…yeah. XD) Congrats on driving to your cousin's house!!! So glad it went smoothly. And you bought yourself a coffee?!?!? Jane, that means you're getting old!!! XD (jk, jk. XD) Ooh, can't wait for more flash fiction! Your last one was great. Life is going well, writing is going okay, and reading is going fantastic. I've read over 50 books this year and still counting. XD I think I read too much sometimes…

    • Jane Maree

It’s going to be so much fun, I’m looking forward to it already!!

YES, I’M SO OLD, HELP ME. 😂

You’ve read fifty books?? That’s SO COOL. Use that free time for all the book reading, girl. You won’t regret it. 😛

  10. Jem

HOW ARE YOUR PICTURES SO GORGEOUS. If you’ve only just started, they’re sUPPOSed to be aWKWARD, Jane. xP

(Your aesthetic for your NaNo novel is so lovely too!)

Ahaha. What did you think of Scythe??

    • Jane Maree

Sorry! 🙈 Haha, well I think having a good quality camera helps. I’m using one of my sister’s professional cameras, so it’s a good starting point.

It. was. insane. I was absolutely riveted, but at the same time I wasn’t drawn into the characters…and to be honest, I didn’t want to be either, because I wanted to keep a certain mental distance away from that crazy kind of content. It was really good though!

      • Jem

exactly! On the one hand, they’re literally killing people… on the other hand, it’s a solid five-star book, because WOW.

        • Jane Maree

It’s just such a hard book to rate, because it’s amazing and terrible at the same time. But book two is definitely on my TBR as well.

It’s also one of those books that you can only recommend to specific people and with a large disclaimer before you start. 😂

      • Evelyn

        What camera do you use?

        • Jane Maree

It’s my sister’s cannon, and I would tell you the model, except I have no idea and she’s using it at a photo shoot right now, so I’ll get back to you on that one. 😅

        • Jane Maree

The camera is, exactly, a EOS 600 D (but that doesn’t mean anything to my non-photographer brain 😂).

          • Evelyn

            Thanks! xD
