Editing is hard work.
First of all, you have to make some sense of that first draft chaos. Then you have to make it actually good. All the characters and the plot and the world building and all. the. things. And it doesn’t happen after one lot of edits. (I wish.)
It’s very easy to feel like it’s been going on for-evah, and you just want to be done already!
I’ve definitely been there before. 😂
For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been working on editing one of my novels on and off for the last two and a half years. It’s been a huge journey, the story has changed countless times and in so many ways.
I thought I was going to be finished at the beginning of this year, but I’m still here and still editing. I just got it back from a professional editor, and guess what’s next for me guys?
More editing. (Send help. 😅)
Even though it’s only been a bit more than two years, that’s by far the longest I’ve ever had to work on one story for and there’s a part of me that really, really wishes it was done already.
So today I’ve got a word for the writers. For those of you who are just starting on editing your novels. For those who are mid-slog. For those who feel like they’ll never be finished. Even for those of you who’re only just starting to write.
And also for me, because we all need a pep talk sometimes, right? 😛
Keep your eyes on the goal, and never give up. It’s a long, hard slog, but it’s perseverance that gets you to the end.
Everyone has a different journey. Some people will get to milestones faster than others. Take joy in your journey.
Don’t be afraid that you’ll be too late or miss your opportunity, because it will all happen in the perfect timing. You need only persevere and trust.
Let change happen! Your story will never improve, if you don’t take the risk and scrap parts of it. Sometimes even your favourite parts have to be removed for the benefit of your whole story. Be wise, but know that it’s worth it.
There is an end. It won’t be like this forever. Be present where you’re at, but let yourself dream too. You will finish one day. This hard work will pay off. One day you’ll look back and think “I did that” with a smile on your face. It won’t be perfect, for sure, but it is enough. 💕
Keep on going! The finish line could be closer than you realise.
